COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY
Law Clinic
The space allocated for this project included a large, windowless, mechanical penthouse and an existing internal office suite on the adjacent floor. Operating as a law firm within the school, the clinic includes; collaborative work and presentation areas, research space, and client meeting rooms. A dramatic new skylight replaced an existing mechanical hatch and a new steel wrapped spiral stair cut into the structure to combine the two floors. Taking advantage of the natural light from an existing skylight in the adjacent corridor, a continuous clerestory window was carved into the wall of the open work space. Fabric-lined, wood-wrapped booths provide semi-private work spaces for client calls. Computer work stations and a library are housed in wood and resin enclosures. The corridors of the office suite are populated with large colorful niches for break out meetings and additional seating
